Charlotte, To Add Manchester, England, Route From Philadelphia
Arlington, Va. (PROTEXT) - US Airways plans to expand
international service from its Charlotte, N.C., and Philadelphia
hubs in Spring 2000 with daily nonstop flights between Charlotte
and both Paris and Frankfurt, and with the addition of nonstop
service between Philadelphia and Manchester, England.
Paris and Frankfurt will be the second and third major
transatlantic markets served by US Airways from its Charlotte
hub. US Airways inaugurated nonstop Charlotte-London service in
June. Manchester will be the seventh transatlantic destination to
be served by US Airways from the company's Philadelphia hub,
complementing existing flights to Frankfurt, London, Madrid,
Munich, Paris, and Rome.
"These new routes underscore the rapid growth of Charlotte as
an international gateway and Philadelphia's leading role in
transatlantic air service. They will increase our breadth of
transatlantic service and will create tremendous new economic
benefits for commerce, as well as travel and tourism, for a vast
number of communities on the US Airways system," said US Airways
Chairman Stephen M. Wolf.
US Airways is filing applications today with the U.S.
Department of Transportation for the Charlotte-Paris and
Philadelphia-Manchester routes. This will enable US Airways to
operate one daily nonstop flight in each of these markets. The
Charlotte-Paris service will begin on April 13, with the return
Paris-Charlotte flights starting on April 14. The Charlotte-
Frankfurt service will begin on May 18, with Frankfurt-Charlotte
flights starting the next day.
Philadelphia-Manchester service will begin on May 25 with
return flights starting on May 26. Manchester is the second US
Airways destination in Great Britain.
US Airways currently flies to London's Gatwick airport from
Philadelphia and Charlotte. US Airways also has applied to
operate service between Pittsburgh and London.
US Airways will operate the new services with the Boeing 767-
200 aircraft, offering 24 premium Envoy Class seats and 179 seats
in the Economy Class cabin.
With these new services, more than 135 communities served by
US Airways, the US Airways Express carriers, US Airways Shuttle
and MetroJet will have convenient flight connections over US
Airways' three international gateways, Charlotte, Philadelphia
and Pittsburgh, to US Airways' growing transatlantic route
network.
US Airways operates 472 jet and US Airways Express nonstop
flights daily from Charlotte Douglas International Airport,
serving 100 destinations, positioning Charlotte as a major
international gateway. US Airways and US Airways Express together
enplaned more than 11 million passengers at Charlotte in 1998.
At Philadelphia, US Airways and the US Airways Express
carriers operate 389 daily flights nonstop to 92 destinations.
Together, US Airways and the US Airways Express carriers enplaned
more than 8 million passengers at Philadelphia International
Airport in 1998.
US Airways, US Airways Express, US Airways Shuttle, and low-
fare MetroJet fly to 202 destinations worldwide, including 38
states in the U.S., Bermuda, Cancun, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay,
Nassau, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Croix, and the
Canadian destinations of Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton, and
